Some Images from the Khao Sompoch Walk

1 - 9 April 1999

Inspired by the Songkhla Lake Dhamma-Yatras, another member of Phra Sekhiyadhamma has organized walks around his local mountain. Ven. Somboon Sumangalo and his friends have staged three one week walks over the past few years. The next one is being planned for sometime in November, the start of the fire lighting season.

Walking through the district market to remind people:

The streams have dried up,
The animals have lost their homes.
Join our hearts & energy,
Stop lighting forest fires.

Most of the fires are set by local villagers trying to earn extra income from honey and forest game. The consumerism that the West in cahoots with the Thai elites have encouraged over the last few decades has made money the meaning and purpose of people's lives, unlike in the past when harmony, respect for elders, the maintenance of traditions, etc. were most esteemed. The economic mess of the last couple years has exascerbated those problems. However, they will conmtinue as long as greed and selfishness -- i.e. capitalism and consumerism -- are the dominant forces in society.
