Messages of Truth from Suan Mokkh
In 1988, Ajarn Buddhadāsa dictated a series of pamphlets for the
“Buddha-Dhamma Buddhadāsa Week” at Chulalongkorn University in
Bangkok. In these "Messages," Tan Ajarn tries to get across some
of the basics that he thought could help city people to start
understanding Buddhism correctly and practically, starting with a dose of
common sense morality. These were translated way back then, but I am now
re-editing them.

The Real Buddha
(in preparation)
The kind of Buddha that can help us here & now is not any of those
beautiful images,
and not even the historical Buddha who died 2500 years ago. What is this
ever present, always real Buddha? |

The Cure for the Spiritual
Disease:
We are terrified by the physical diseases that threaten our lives but
ignore the worst disease of all, the one that makes us suffer even when we
are health, happy, and comfortable. What is this disease? What causes it?
What can we do about it? Consider this
transcript of the first talk given during retreat in February 1986 (part 1
of 3). |

What is destroying the physical world that we depend on
for life? To save the world we must dig deeper than the material and
political causes; we must uncover the moral & spiritual causes.
Recognizing this simple fact, we must learn how to conserve the
"inner ecology" if there is to be any hope of preserving a
healthy "outer ecology." Click
here for
Ajarn Buddhadasa's advice on the ultimate conservation. |
Beginning Anapanasati:
At Suan Mokkh, the preferred system of meditation is Mindfulness
with Breathing In & Out, the only meditation system
described in detail and practiced regularly by the Lord Buddha himself.
For some reason, this teaching has become unpopular, replaced by more
modern systems. Fans of the Buddha, however, should look into the 16 Step
approach to Anapanasati. This article is a quick introduction. If
you would like to try it, click here. |
The Prison of Life:
We turn life into a prison every day due to our habit of mistaking
things to be "I" and "mine." Tan Ajarn lists some of
the main things that we turn into prisons, including some that you might
not expect. Does your life ever feel like a prison? Would you like to
break out?
If so, please click here. |
