From
His Own Lips
One of Ajarn Buddhadasa's major projects over the years was the
compilation of four sets of translations from the Pali Suttas: the From His
Own Lips Series. When be began, complete translations of the Tripitaka
did not exist in Siam. Even now, most of the available translations are in any
overly formal language that many people have trouble understanding.
In these series, he not only translated significant chunks of the Suttas
into an understandable language, he did so with scrupulous honesty. Unlike
many translators, including Western, he kept his personal interpretations out
of his translations and left them to his extensive commentaries. Thus, he left
ambiguous passages ambiguous so that the reader could tackle the different
possible interpretations for herself, rather than have to follow the
translator's interpretation. He also left in many important Pali terms so that
readers would know were the translations were coming from.
These translations were arranged thematically:
The Buddha's Life From His Own Lips
The Four Noble Truths From His Own Lips
Dependent Co-origination From His Own Lips
Treasure Chest From His Own Lips
We will translate and gradually publish selections from these massive
works (over 3000 pages). Later, the Tables of Contents to these four volumes
will be provided to give you an outline of what to expect in the future.
Note on Pali Spelling: Due to font limitations, spellings are
merely approximate in words requiring diacritical marks.
For now, please ponder the following passages:
This passage is about one of the famous three knowledges
that occurred to the Lord Buddha under the Bodhi Tree. Usually, it is
explained in terms of remembering "past lives." Here it is explained
in terms more immediate and related to the quenching of dukkha in this very
life.
